Charles E. Hein, P.S. 4001013034

Charles obtained his B.S in Forestry from Michigan Tech in 1953, after serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1949.  He was also in the Air Force Reserves until being Honorably Discharged in 1967 with the rank of Captain.  He received his surveying license in 1962, having gained his work experience under the watchful eye of Helmuth “Hammer” Steinhilb, P.S. 8896.  After graduating from Tech Chuck worked for C & H as their chief forester and, after licensure, their surveyor.  He also began a private, part-time surveying business that was to become Hein Surveying.

In 1973 he received his M.S. in Forestry, again, from MTU.  It was then that he started teaching forestry and surveying classes at Michigan Tech.  At the time surveying was an “option” in the Forestry Program.  In 1978 he was instrumental in establishing Surveying as a Bachelor’s Degree at Tech, the first class of 6 graduating in 1980.  He continued teaching at Tech until his retirement in 1995.  In 2011 Chuck was awarded the “Surveyor of the Past” award by the Michigan Society of Professional Surveyors for his work at Tech, for instilling the love of surveying in over 150 students, and for his contributions to the surveying profession.

Throughout that entire time until his death in 2007 Chuck continued to survey, and provided the tools, records and encouragement to his son Steve to continue to work in the Keweenaw as he had done for so many years.

From Family Roots to Professional Results.

Meet the Team Today

Hein Surveying continues a proud three-generation legacy of professional land surveying in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, led today by Matthew Hein alongside his father, Steven Hein.

  • Steve started helping Chuck survey when he was seven years old, holding pencils on corner monuments as a “sight” for his Dad and trying his best to hold the end of the measuring tape that a much stronger Dad was pulling.  Steve continued working with his Father through high school and while attending Michigan Tech.  In 1980 Steve graduated from Tech with a B.S. in Surveying, being one of six to graduate in the first class with the newly established degree.

Upon graduation Steve worked in Sault Ste. Marie for a year and then in Butte, Montana for three years.  While in Butte he worked for an engineering company, a gold mine, and also started a small surveying firm with his supervisor from the engineering company.  In the spring of 1985 he and his wife, Allison, moved back to the Calumet to start raising a family and to turn his father, Chuck’s, part-time business into a full-time surveying business.  Steve obtained his Michigan Professional Land Surveyors license in 1986.

In 2022 Steve welcomed his son, Matt, the third generation, to the Company.

Steve and his wife, Allison, live in Laurium, where they raised their three children.  Steve spends what free time he has at the “farm” tending his blueberries and “playing” in the woods, fishing in Lake Superior, hunting, and spending time at the camp.  He is also active in their church, having spent 26 years as the president of the congregation.

  • Matt is a 2012 graduate of Michigan Tech, B.S. Surveying Engineering.  During college, he spent time surveying with Hein Surveying, the National Forest Service in Escanaba, MI, and in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.  After college, he moved out west were his work led him to work on a variety of surveying projects in North and South Dakota, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming and Canada, all while living in Montana.

After a decade working in the West, Matt moved back to the U.P. to work with his father to keep the legacy of Hein Surveying going.  In 2025 he obtained his Michigan Professional Land Surveyors License.

During his time back at Hein Surveying, Matt has been the main field crew and drafter.  He is also responsible for researching office records for proposals and upcoming jobs.  The roles started to change in 2024 as Matt began taking on more office and behind the scenes work as his dad began thinking about retirement.

Matt lives in Laurium with his wife, Allie, and son Fletcher, who can be seen working with him on jobs during the summer.  He enjoys spending time at the family farm and at the camp on Lake Superior, fishing, hunting and hiking in the Keweenaw, visiting Montana and is active at church.
